Proof of Conservatism

.

It goes without saying, if you are going to run as a Republican, you must advertise how conservative you are. Even John McCain, who was one of the most liberal Republicans ever to run for the White House made the laughable claim he was a conservative.

The Presidential race has come down to two Republicans, Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich. Both claim to be conservatives. Is there any proof that one of them is?

Yes, there is.

Newt Gingrich went to Congress in 1978. When he did, he founded something called the Conservative Opportunity Society. He had a radical idea. He thought conservatives could take control of Congress.

At the time, liberal Democrats owned the House of Representatives.

Moderate Republicans who were in charge of the party were not very inclined to do anything about it.

In 1984, Newt Gingrich was a part of the Republican Platform Committee for the Republican Convention. He went to war with moderates in the party who wanted the Republican Platform to allow for tax increases. Bob Dole, who would lead the GOP to an terrible defeat twelve years later was one of the RINOs who insisted that there be a provision in the Republican Platform that said raising taxes would be ok. Newt Gingrich fought him all the way and famously labeled him “the tax collector for the welfare state.”

Newt went on a few years later to blast Reagan when he though Reagan was straying from conservative principles. President Reagan was a great man, but unlike the Pope, he was not infallible nor did he claim to be.

Afterwards, Gingrich lead the 1994 revolution that installed Republicans in the majority of the House of Representatives for the first time in 38 years.

Contrast that with Mitt Romney. Before 1994, Mitt Romney was a liberal Democrat. He voted Democrat and even contributed to Democrats. In 1994, he became a Republican so he could run against Ted Kennedy. When Kennedy tried to tie Romney to Reagan and Bush, Romney instead of embracing Reagan said, “I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I am not trying to return to Reagan-Bush. In 2002, Romney proudly announced he was a progressive. From 2003 to 2007, Romney was the Governor of Massachusetts and he governed Massachusetts as a liberal. Some of his most liberal policies, including Romneycare and cap and trade, he imposed when he was a lame duck. He imposed them after he announced he would not seek reelection.

Even in 2008, Romney ran as a moderate. IN 2007, he proposed a national version of Romneycare. It was only after the Tea Party came to life and brought the Republican Party back from the edge of extinction did Romney start talking like a conservative.

There is an old saying that says, past performance is the best indicator of future behavior. Newt Gingrich has his past performance. Certainly it is not perfect but certainly it was conservative. Mitt Romney’s performance was not perfect either. In fact it was about as imperfect as it can get.

It was also about as liberal as it could get too.

If someone is going to claim to be a conservative, perhaps there should be some proof of acting as a conservative.

Gingrich did and Romney never has.

    Good, poignant article. Thx.

Thanks for a great essay. I knew most of it but I never Newt went head to head with Reagan on at least one occasion. It goes to prove that not only was Reagan merely human and, therefore, fallible, but also that Gingrich used a lot of courage to stand up and call out the popular President when he strayed. This is the kind of person we need as POTUS for 2013-17, perhaps -21.

It’s about the Constitution…not conservatism. Newt and Romney aren’t either…see http://www.amycontrada.com, from Taxachusettes and her books entitled the “Mitt Romney Deception” and “Romney vs Family Values”. While Governor he failed to uphold the state Constitution, written by Adams…and let the judiciary make laws! As for Newt, see his voting record at JBS.org, President McManus’ video…Newt voted for big federal government land grabs, the creation of federal dept of education, massive foreign aid expenditures, expansion of the IRS…all Marxist, unconstitutional and un-conservative.

Nothing new here. The RNC will not allow us to vote for a conservative, that’s why we have these choices. It comes down to RINO or Marxist: very simple.
Until we take over the Repub Party and make the RINOs extinct, we will have to put up with progressives on our ballots.
It’s a terrible choice: Mitt or Newt, but I can’t stand Gingrich’s unpredictable petulance and his holier than thou hypocrisy. Apologies to Newt fans for being a kill-joy and a broken record, but he simply can’t win against The One. It will be a re-do of a gray-haired man against a ‘cool’, ‘black’, younger man; we all know who won with that combo.

Mitt is a rino and newt is a progressive and a dangerous one. Where is your head at Judson?

    King of Bain
This video is 28 minutes long. It authenticates the claims that Mitt Romney made his fortune as a major corporate raider. One who’s stolen the jobs of thousands of American workers, while amassing a net worth estimated at 1/4 a billion dollars I recommend taking the time to watch some, or better yet all, of it.
Capitalism made America great – free markets, innovation, hard work – the building blocks of the American Dream. But in the wrong hands some of those dreams can turn into nightmares. This film is about one raider and his firm and how they destroyed that dream for thousands of Americans and their families – Mitt Romney and Bain Capital.
Think you know Mitt? YOU OWE IT TO AMERICA TO WATCH THIS! It’s not about Capitalism, it’s about JOBS

This is an audio of an interview by a woman who grew up in the Mormon church with a dad who was a Bishop. (She has since left the church) She explains the real intent behind Romney “needing” to become president. It’s worth listening to. It starts with music and an intro so be patient. These were things we were told when we lived in AZ back in the 80′s and she confirms them.

    Mitt Romney on abortion.

Judges, parental rights and their teenage daughters.

We all know about Mitt Romney’s record in Massachusetts.

He was in favor of strict gun control (he says he no longer is).
He was in favor of gay marriage (he says he no longer is).

But what about his position on Roe v Wade?

Maybe most important where Does he? Did he? Will he? stand on

Government Intrusion into life-altering decisions YOU should be able to make

    for yourself and your children?

Think you Know Mitt? Think again.

    Watch the video.

    Then decide, Mitt or Newt?

  8. Tom Wright says:

Is it possible for someone to explain what happened to Ann Coulter? Her love for Romney and her vitriol against Newt seem to be totally opposite from the conservative nature of all of her books that she has written (and that I have in my library).

  9. Karen says:

Newt does not claim to be perfect either. He is imperfect, like us all, and is a different person from the man he was 20 years ago. Who among us would make every decision exactly the way we made it 20 years ago. He, is not however, a progressive. And regardless of the media spin you use to claim that, or the votes he made in order to get some other concession out of Clinton, he has more than enough accomplishment to indicate that he is a conservative. More importantly, although they have not allowed it to be discussed in the debates–leaving only Ron Paul to consistently bring it up (and I agree with Paul on this) Gingrich has talked over and over in his town hall meetings about getting back to the Constitution, eliminating judges who want to reinterpret it or legislate from the bench based on their own misreading or total ignoring of the Constitution, and shrinking government back to what the Constitution allows it to do. If you are relying only on the scripted questions in the debates–which are intended to get the candidates going after each other rather than after Obama, you have missed the best of Gingrich.

Lets get real! What happen when we (conservatives) had the Congress 1987? Nothing just same old good guys. More that things change, the more they stay the same.
